Certification Process for Advanced Individuals

1. Submit the CMMI Instructor Application Package

   You must submit:

   • A completed Partner Candidate Sponsorship Form
   • For non-native English speakers send in your TOEFL score demonstrating you can read, write, and speak understandable English.

2. Review Instructor Application

   Each application will be reviewed by the CMMI Institute Instructor Application Review committee.

   Candidates will be reviewed on the following selection criteria:

   • Teaching Experience and Skills

     Candidates must have at least one year of experience teaching technical or management subject matter to adult learners training and/or experience in classroom presentation and management skills.

   • Discipline Area Experience and Skills

     The candidate must have at least 10 years of experience in their desired domain.

     Development:

     • Candidates must have three years of experience interpreting or applying the CMMI models in a work environment and five years of experience in product development showing clear evidence of expertise in several areas outlined in the application.

     Services:

     • Candidates must have three years of experience interpreting or applying the CMMI models in a work environment and 10 years of experience as an employee and/or manager/supervisor in a services environment. 3 of the 10 years of services experience must be in a non-CMMI environment; 2 of the 10 years must be managing a service. Experience may be on the job and can include volunteer or community service.

     Acquisition:

     • Candidates must have three years of experience interpreting or applying the CMMI models in a work environment and five years of experience in acquisition showing clear evidence of expertise in several areas outlined in the application.

     PeopleCMM:

     • The candidate must have three years of experience interpreting or applying the People CMM model in a work environment, ten years of experience in management showing clear evidence of expertise in several areas outlined in the application.

   • Academic Credentials

     Candidates must have a Bachelor’s degree in a related area or equivalent experience.

   • Appraisal Experience and Skills

     Model Experience and Skills:

     • Candidates must have three years of the above experience serving as at least one of the following: member of engineering process group (EPG), member of process improvement (PI) team, process improvement coach.
     • At least two SCAMPI A appraisals or one SCAMPI A and two SCAMPI B or C appraisals
     • These appraisals must be done within 24 months prior to desired training

   • Language Experience and Skills

     Fluency in English is required to become a CMMI Certified Instructor.

3. Submit Written Exercise

   You must successfully complete a scenario-based written exercise before advancing to the next step, unless you already hold a Lead Appraiser certification for your desired constellation.

   Your completed written exercise should be sent to the CMMI Institute for evaluation. Candidates whose exercise evaluation is not satisfactory will receive directions for their next steps.

4. Pass CMMI Qualification Exam

   After successfully completing the scenario exercise, you can register for the qualification exam.

   To register for the exam a candidate must:

   • Contact the CMMI Institute to schedule your qualification exam.
   • You may take the exam a maximum of three times, each attempt will cost a fee of $250.

5. Receive your Certification

FAQ’s

• I'm a SCAMPI Lead Appraiser for Services and an Instructor for Development, what do I need to do to become an Instructor for Services?

  To become a Lead Appraiser for Services, you already needed to complete a written assignment and pass an exam. Therefore, you do not need to complete those certification steps again. 
  
  However, you need to be up to date on the learner centered teaching techniques before you can teach the Introduction to CMMI for Services training course.
  
  Contact the CMMI Institute to activate your Services Instructor certification or to verify your eligiblity.
